Seriously into things now (330k done), including the cutest ferry ever!

Our usual reporter is chilling tonight, so it's my turn to try and make sense of this crazy journey!  Before I tell the tale, let me update you on things from my perspective.

They are going GREAT!  It's amazing.. it's been confronting and intense, but also it feels like the fields here, just an enormous expanse where we can go and do whatever we want!

So, we left you last time in Delft, where we headed north to our old stomping ground (from 2 years ago) Leiden.  We had a great tail wind, and made easy work of it, arriving in time to have lunch at our old haunt. The sun was shining and with the wind at our backs we decided to keep going, and rode another 15k to the town of Lisse. The weather started to turn and we grabbed a cheap hotel, across the road from the Keukenhof gardens, a highlight from our last trip. As expected, this year we were too late for tulip season, otherwise I doubt this hotel would have been on our menu!!

The next day was a very relaxed 18k into Haarlem, to meet some fellow Central Coast travellers (friends of Serena's) who were staying there at the end of their first cycling day in Europe.  We successfully avoided most of the rain clouds, but with heavy rain overnight, we skipped our desire to relive the delight of last time's camp site, for a cute hotel in the centre of town.

A rendezvous dinner in the main square was followed by cake and cards in the lobby of our friends' hotel, only to meet again the next morning for the ride out!  Our paths were aligned for the first 18k, so we headed out of Haarlem, again, trying to dodge the rain (and failing at times!).  The paths were as delightful as our company!

After  saying farewell to our fellow Coasties, and taking refuge from the rain in a Frite shop (yummy), the weather changed and the rest of the day became a joyous ride through beautiful countryside. At one point the path just stopped at a canal, with a wharf and a large bell... after ringing the bell (twice), a man appeared on the opposite shore, and brought the ferry over for us, CUTEST THING EVER!

So, here we are in Avenhoor, in a cute little hotel (again avoiding rain, not Sally - she is expected to make an appearance for tomorrow night). In the morning we're heading for the ferry to Stavoren, there's only 3 a day, so our timing might be under pressure and a little more rain is forecast... should be interesting!

PS - Checkout more drone footage below, and don't miss the surprise ending (and no it's not me being taken out by the road bike whizzing past!).

Crossing our path from 2 years ago... We're back in Leiden!

On to Lisse, and a super cute cafe!

   And some cakes!!!

Finally on to Haarlem, Dutch Portuguese Tarts didn't impress :(

Ready to Roll out with our friends!

Someone's not sure what all the fuss is about!

But the Big Ferry definitely impressed!

The little one impressed me more! (There it is on the other side)

Drone Flash - This one has a surprise ending!

5000km - TICK, Mont Saint Michel - TICK, Crazy rainy mud riding - TICK, Normandy - AMAZING!

WOOHOOO - 5000KM!  We did it. MASSIVE LEGENDS!! But let's get down to the journey of the last week.  So much action, so many amazing things to see, so many intense emotions - buckle up for a long post with a billion pics, and even a video.  There are really four parts of the last week, so let's keep things organised and go in order... 1. Leaving Saint Malo and heading to Mont Saint Michel - around 55km We leapt out of bed (not really) early to get on the bike cause we knew we had a long ride ahead with unstable weather.  To our delight after climbing our way out of Saint Malo, waving to the local hunter who passed us with his sausage dog and shotgun, we were in gorgeous farming country, the sun started to come out, and when we crested the final hill of the morning could see the famous Mont Saint Michel out there in the sea waiting for us.  We couldn't believe it - we were only 20km in and with the clear weather we could see all the way to this gorgeous 100...

Mike's Update on "Life on the Road"

It's me again... Mike, thought it was time to update that map ... here's the new one... that's 1,750km of action! Yep...as predicted by Serena last time... we're currently on a double rest day in Jönköping (on a huge lake - kind of a beach side vibe ... downtown is pretty .. see pics below), it's about half way to our Swedish target of Stockholm. I'm so amazed that we're here, I've been looking at Jönköping on a map for months... it's surreal! We seem to be settling into a pretty great routine. Every day is amazing and huge and full of challenges and surprises and incredible beauty, but they all seem to fit into a general pattern. Getting up and on the road early, really works for us. We started doing it to avoid rain, but it just seems to really give us a kick start each day. We're making great progress and feeling confident and very happy with the route we chose! Last update we were at the end of our first Route 1 day in Varnamo, camped by the ...

This Is The Way We Do Coastal Swedish Cycling

Right.  I'm on a mission.  It's three nights since the last post and there are no other words for it other than BEST CYCLING EVER!  I'm sitting here at a cute local cafe overlooking the water in a tiny weeny place called Pårp - we camped 1km overnight in the cutest little campground - and we just had a classic Swedish brekkie - pics down below.  Now the reason i'm on a mission is I wanted to get this post done before we head off for our day, you see after much ummmming and ahhhhing we've decided to leave this delightfully beautiful and hedonistic Swedish coastal cycling and head inland.  "Go and do the west coast" everyone said, "It's absolutely stunning", they said.  And they were so right.  We've had 4 glorious nights on the coast now, and we're up for a change of scenery - we've decided to leave Route 1 to Gothenburg and try our luck up the middle of Sweden on our Stockholm.  So, I want to close off this phase before we leave ...
