Welcome!

Welcome to the Big Bike Year!

Well sportsfans, we made it.  We are here at the airport, all checked in and through security, and I can breathe easily.  It's been a pretty big prep time to get us here, bigger than I anticipated, but as I lean into that weird limbo of sitting in the international terminal waiting for the next phase to begin, the tiredness is wafting away and the vision of a bike, a tent, great laughter, and some good cheese and bread is calling - BIG TIME!

We've named our blog The Big Bike Year after one of my favourite movies, The Big Year.  The story of two people diving into a year to honour and play with a deep part of themselves that feels too decadent, too trivial, too unworthy to allow to go wild.  Well, we're going wild, baby!  So instead of Jack Black and Steve Martin, it's Mike and I launching out into a crazy space of flying-by-the-seat-of-our-pants adventuring with our bikes and a tent, and not a lot of kit, cycling around Europe, maybe Northern Africa, maybe some of the UK, maybe the Balkans...who knows!  We start in France and hope to cycle the summer through Scandinavia, coming back through the Baltic countries, then back to France for a good rest.  But we just don't know what paths we'll discover, people we meet, weather we come across, so let's just see what happens.

Bring on THE BIG BIKE YEAR!

5000km - TICK, Mont Saint Michel - TICK, Crazy rainy mud riding - TICK, Normandy - AMAZING!

WOOHOOO - 5000KM!  We did it. MASSIVE LEGENDS!! But let's get down to the journey of the last week.  So much action, so many amazing things to see, so many intense emotions - buckle up for a long post with a billion pics, and even a video.  There are really four parts of the last week, so let's keep things organised and go in order... 1. Leaving Saint Malo and heading to Mont Saint Michel - around 55km We leapt out of bed (not really) early to get on the bike cause we knew we had a long ride ahead with unstable weather.  To our delight after climbing our way out of Saint Malo, waving to the local hunter who passed us with his sausage dog and shotgun, we were in gorgeous farming country, the sun started to come out, and when we crested the final hill of the morning could see the famous Mont Saint Michel out there in the sea waiting for us.  We couldn't believe it - we were only 20km in and with the clear weather we could see all the way to this gorgeous 100...

Beziers or Bust x 2

(Mike again and Serena will do the pics) - We left you last time in Avignon relaxing and basking in the glory of a great week! But all great teams need to adapt and pivot.  And adapt we did. Adaptation 1 - Cody Breakaway It happened - Cody graduated from his cycle touring apprenticeship! This manifested in the form of Cody deciding to push on and see what he could achieve solo.  For us this led to a very tough morning where we had to get our own breakfast - after 10 days of the best croissants and chausson-au-pommes delivered every morning by Cody, Serena and I struggled for about an hour looking for one that looked as good  - eventually we found one that fell way short! Saying goodbye to our wonderful team meat, Cody.  Mike giving last minute tips as I had a few tears (and took a few pics), then hugs all round and off he went - if you love them, set them free! Adaptation 2 - Tyre Wars! So, while Cody was burning rubber on the route towards the coast, we took an extr...

WOW - we hit the Canal des 2 Mers, Autumn, and 4000km. We are SUPREME LEGENDS!

Right Sportsfans, settle in.  It's been an amazing 11 days since we last posted, and today you have me (Serena) to yourselves, and I'm chilled here in Bordeaux writing to you with my new haircut and all the washing hanging around the room drying because we're on 2 full rest days - YEAH BABY!  You can see the first pic posted there above, and it's all I can do to say WOW.  WOW. WOW. WOW.  We've hit Autumn.  And it is glorious.  Most of the riding we've done since we left Carcassonne has been on canals, and this is what most of that riding has looked like.  I don't know how to describe it to you, all I can say is that every now and then I was so moved by how beautiful it was I had to stop my bike, breathe it in, and now and then cry a little.  It was really really something.  And because it's now cold and a bit wet, there were hardly any other cyclists around so most of the time we had all of this to ourselves.  Just WOW. The other big new...
